Tennis, Maths and Discovery

Today we had such a fun day. We had Ngaire come and take us for tennis skills.

When then had to solve a maths problem. We had 8 multilink cubes (2 red, 2 yellow, 2 green and 2 blue). We had to fit them together to make a cube so that each colour shows on each face just once. We made lots of mistakes but we didn't give up.

Finally we ended our day with discovery.

Check out our photos below :-)

Using 'The Ridiculous' Thinker's Key

This afternoon we used 'The Ridiculous' Thinker's Key to justify why people should be banned from swimming at the beach. This was our first session. Hopefully you will see our thinking skills develop as the year goes on.

Using our library at school

Today we spent some time enjoying our school library. We learned about how each book has a special letter on the top. When we finish reading a book  we needed to put it back in the box with the correct letter.

Playing with Proverbs

Today in class we had a bit of fun playing with proverbs. Mrs Kern gave us the beginnings and we finished them off. We hope you enjoy reading them below.

You can't teach an old dog new sign language.

You can't teach an old dog new things like flying.

You can't teach an old dog new jumps.

You can't teach an old dog if your invisible.

You can't teach an old dog new things.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

No news is no people know what is happening.

No news is boring.

No news is disappearing.

No news is old.

No news is here.

No news is nothing.

Children should be heard and not screaming. In class they listen.

Children should be heard and not fired.

Children should be heard and not pushing.

Children should be heard and not ignored.

Children should be heard and not loud.

Children should be heard and not hit.

If you lie down with a dog you'll get furry.

You are never to old for an adventure.

Where there's smoke there's a fire engine.

Where there's smoke there's danger.

Trains Reading Group Visits Bunnings

The Trains reading group has been reading about how paint is mixed during their reading sessions. Today they visited Bunnings and had a chance to ask questions and watch paint being mixed by an expert. Thank you Sarah for taking the children and to the team at Bunnings that made this happen.

Number Line Relays

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers.
This has been our focus over the last few weeks. We have been learning about teen numbers and have enjoyed games of teen bingo, enjoyed singing maths songs and counting upto 50. This week we also did some number relays where we had to put numerals in order from 0-20. At the start most of us were starting at 0 and counting up to find where we should place the digit. After sharing some of the other ways (strategies) we could use, like knowing the number before or after or if it comes between, we did the relays again and we were much quicker.

Small Ball Skills with Bryony

Today we focused on underarm throwing with Bryony. We had to think carefully about how we held the ball and when to let go of the ball.

Measurement

In class we are practicing the skill of measuring. We have been comparing our heights and the size of our hands. We use words like taller than, shorter than and the same size when comparing our measurements. Mrs Kern is going to keep our hands and our heights in a time capsule for the year. At the end of the year we will get them back out and see if we have changed.

Our New Reading Phones

We are enjoying reading with our new reading phones. They help us listen to our own voices and make sure what we are saying makes sense and sounds good. Thank you Laser Plumbing for donating the pipes and elbows to make the phones.

Week 2

WOW, I can't believe we have had 2 weeks at school...very short weeks. We have been busy learning class routines and getting to know each other. Lots of us have been earning warm fuzzies for being kind to others in class which is sooo nice to see!
